 The Papacy Age – Some Countries Expelled Jewish People?!? Which Countries? When Did This Happen? 

 EXPULSIONS OF THE JEWS (ONLY A PARTIAL LIST)

· Alexandria 415 Cyril (Early Church Father) expelled Jews from the city, stripped of all possessions

• Spain 613 Jews forced to embrace Christianity or be expelled.
• Italy 855 Pope Leo III outlawed Judaism, Jews were exiled.
• Germany 1012 Emperor Henry II expelled Jews from Mainz.
• Bavaria 1276 Jews expelled from Upper Bavaria.
• England 1290 King Edward I expelled the Jews.
• France 1306 King Philip IV expelled 100,000 Jews, forcing them to leave all possessions behind (wanting to outdo King Edward I, Philip's adversary).
• Switzerland 1427 All Jews expelled from Berne.
• Spanish Inquisition July 30, 1492 The most notorious of all the inquisitions. In the same year Christopher Columbus set sail to the Indies. 200,000 Jewish people, under the authority of Catholic monarchs Ferdinand I of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, were expelled from Spain. "Tens of thousands of refugees died while trying to reach safety. In

some instances, Spanish ship captains charged Jewish passengers exorbitant sums, then dumped them overboard in the middle of the ocean. In the last days before the expulsion,

rumors spread throughout Spain that the fleeing refugees had swallowed gold and diamonds; many Jews were knifed to death by brigands hoping to find treasures in their

stomachs."1

• Warsaw, Sicily, Lithuania, Portugal 1483 Jews expelled.
• Germany 1510 Jews expelled from Brandenburg.
• Central Italy 1569 Pope Pius V expelled the Jews.
• Italy and Bavaria 1593 Pope Clement VIII expelled the Jews.
• Germany 1614 Jews expelled from Frankfurt.

This is only a short summary of the persecution endured by the Jewish people during the Papacy Age. Sadly, the very ones who should have been standing with and protecting the Jews were their persecutors.
